Indiana man convicted in 2001 rape and murder of teenager to be executed by lethal injection

 MICHIGAN CITY, IN — After 24 agonizing years of legal maneuvers that prolonged a family's suffering, Indiana executed convicted killer and rapist Roy Lee Ward, 53, early Friday morning. His death by lethal injection closes the book on one of the most brutal crimes in the state's history: the 2001 home invasion, rape, and savage murder of 15-year-old Stacy Payne.

Ward's execution brings a long-awaited finality to the family of the honor student and cheerleader, whose life was violently stolen on July 11, 2001, inside the supposed safety of her own home in the small town of Dale.

The Unspeakable Horror

The facts of the case are a chilling testament to Ward’s utter depravity and the immense pain inflicted on his teenage victim. Authorities confirmed that Ward forcibly entered Stacy Payne's family residence, a monstrous violation of privacy that escalated into unspeakable violence.

In an act of sheer savagery, Ward first raped the defenseless teenager, then repeatedly struck and stabbed her with both a knife and a dumbbell. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her catastrophic injuries hours later. Former Town Marshal Matt Keller, who found the girl and arrested Ward while the killer was still at the scene, stated he could not "imagine the immense pain, suffering, and sheer terror that Stacy experienced during the last moments of her young life."
