Des Moines school district sues firm behind hiring of illegal alien superintendent
DES MOINES, IA — The Des Moines School District (DMPS) has initiated a civil suit against the executive search firm responsible for hiring its former superintendent, Ian Roberts, after Roberts was arrested on federal charges and his extensive criminal history and immigration status came to light.
The district is formally pursuing legal action against JG Consulting for alleged breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation, and general negligence. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages, citing the significant costs incurred from the scandal, including the necessity of finding a replacement executive and severe reputational harm.
Roberts, who led the largest school district in Iowa, was recently taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service in Polk County Jail, facing federal charges. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a scathing statement asserting that Roberts’ "rap sheet and immigration history reveal a long record of criminal conduct," claiming he should never have been in a position overseeing children.
Court documents and statements from DHS detail a pattern of alleged unlawful conduct by Roberts, including:
Convictions for reckless driving and unlawful operation in Maryland (2012).
A conviction in Pennsylvania for unlawful possession of a loaded firearm (2022).
Prior charges dating back to 1996 and 2020 in New York, involving criminal possession of narcotics and various weapon charges.
The DMPS lawsuit specifically alleges that JG Consulting materially breached its agreement by "failing to properly vet Roberts" and referring him as a candidate when he could not lawfully hold the position.
In response, an attorney representing JG Consulting stated the firm intends to "fully defend ourselves" in court, claiming the district's decision to litigate over their candidate choice is "unfortunate and unwarranted."
The ongoing controversy has placed intense scrutiny on the vetting standards employed by executive search firms nationwide. Roberts was also discovered to have been illegally registered to vote as a Democrat in Maryland, adding another layer to the federal inquiries.
